I tend to assume that everyone has ulterior motives. Especially if the seem to take an interest in me. This isn't any better than being oblivious to signals, or naive about a person's intentions. I tend to read too much into things, and pick up on signals that aren't there. Almost to the point that I'm reluctant to talk to, for the purpose of getting to know, anyone who isn't a geek or a mature professional type person.
Might as well give him a chance, but yes, keep it public or, if you want to test it, just out of the public eye, but still close enough that it's safe. Of course, as for groping, in my group of friends, anything above the waist is just friendly. :P
