Random and Martin, a la Top Gun.
Rated G
Smoooshy.
"You shake my nerves and you rattle my brain
Too much love drives a man insane
You broke my will, oh what a thrill
Goodness gracious great balls of fire"
Random of Amber had a good singing voice. A bit rusty from disuse, but good, all the same. It rang true and clear, out through the bar, lifting easily over the background noise.
"I learned to love all of Hollywood money
You came along and you moved me honey
I changed my mind, looking fine
Goodness gracious great balls of fire"
Martin of Amber did not. This was probably because he was, well, three. Three year olds didn't tend to care about things like that. Three year olds don't generally care about things like lyrics either, but Martin did, solemnly piping in for the 'Great Balls of Fire' part.
"You kissed me baby, woo.....it feels good
Hold me baby, learn to let me love you like I should
Your fine, so kind
I'm a nervous world that you're mine mine mine mine-ine"
As Random's voice draws out in the long note of the 'woo,' and his hands slide down the piano keys, negotiating carefully around the swinging feet of the boy sitting in front of him. Martin gives one of his rare grins, and Random smiles back and for a split second they look very much like father and son.
"I cut my nails and I quiver my thumb
I'm really nervous but it sure is fun
Come on baby, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire"
The little performance draws no special amount of attention. Gorlim's been and gone, Mary Anne didn't want to approach. Arithon stopped by to secure himself a copy of the sheet music (later, Random didn't actually have it with him.) Raven arrived, offered Martin a sugar cookie and Random a strange smile.
"Well kiss me baby, woo-oooooo....it feels good
Hold me baby
I want to love you like I should
You're fine, so kind
I got this world that your mine mine mine mine-ine"
Only one person listened and watched, through the entire song. One person, smoking in a back corner, familiar hands nursing a scotch glass. Familiar blond hair slipping in front of green eyes, shadowed as they watched Dadda and his Bug on the piano, singing to eachother loud and happily.
I cut my nails and I quiver my thumb
I'm real nervous 'cause it sure is fun
Come on baba, you drive me crazy
Goodness gracious great balls of fire
I say goodness gracious great balls of fire...oooh...
As the song comes to an end, Random hops to his feet, scoops his Bug into his arms, settling the child easily on his hip with a long practiced and perfected gesture. They make their way back out the door, and as the baby looks back over his father's shoulder, Martin meets his own eyes and remembers. He sips his scotch, and smiles.
Things are better.
