Weirdest thing happened today.

Ever read a book thinking you know the story? Like, you read Romeo and Juliet, and you know they're going to die?

Well, this time around I was reading 'Streetcar Named Desire' and I went through the entire thing absolutely CERTAIN about what would happen next. But no. The ending comes and goes, there's a brutal rape, and I'm left there all 'WHEN DID THE GUY GET RUN OVER?'

I mean, you write a play about a streetcar, you've GOT to have it hit someone. I was actually looking forwards to it. I thought it would be Stanley. And it was like 'yay' because the guy's a total bastard and deserved it.

It would have been nice, you know? Poetically just. The car that brought Blanche into his life sends him out of it. He kinda had it coming.

*sigh*

Ick ick ick, no. You haven't sold me. A rapist is a person with the ability to a) commit horrible violence and b) be sexually aroused by it. Plus, he was a wife-beater. While she was pregnant. *shudders* He has a history of violence against women.

If he were alive today, he'd be in prison for YEARS.

But he was living in a crowded appartment. We see from Stella's nonchalence that him beating her was not a one-time occasion. Whether or not she thinks it's acceptible, this qualifies as an 'abusive' and he'd end up in jail for 5-10 years by Canadian law. If she didn't report him, the neighbors would.

Also, in this quote-unquote 'age of information' it's no longer the man who rules the household. Women are more aware of their rights and more likely to stand up for themselves/use a womans shelter.

It's icky, but it's true. Beating up your wife is a crime.

I'm staying over at her place tomorrow night to get up early and try out my route. It's EXCITING! It also means I get to start sleeping in for spares!

Well, if not rape, then certainly violent sex with little or no concern for a partner. Ideally, oral sex should not envolve choking. Otherwise you're doing something wrong.
