Yes! Another fanfic!

This one again about Random and Ramon. This time in Amber. Go on, read--

OVER THE EDGE

"Ah, brother."

Random shifted slightly at the predatory expression on Eric's face, putting himself between him and Ramon. The other man growled in vague annoyance, because he was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, despite what Random seemed to think. But at the same moment, he was uneasy. Standing at the edge of a cliff- easy spot for an ambush: whoever had built this place clearly knew what they were about.

"Eric. It's been a few years."

The taller, (so Random hadn't been lying about his family's height…) bulkier man glared at him. His eyes didn't so much as flick away from Random as he nodded over his shoulder.

"What's that doing here?"

Ramon barely stifled a sharp retort, barely managed not to throw a punch, but something-
A vague memory of a dark sky and a dark forest.
-something made him stop. Because, yes, Random had asked him not to interfere, and if the other man thought he needed to fight this battle for himself, then who was Ramon to stop him?

"He's my companion. You know as well as I that the courts are boring as fucking hell. I'll be damned if I'm not going to enjoy myself once I'm out. And no, you can't share him, dear. Our fraternal love doesn't extend that far."

It had been the wrong thing to say. Random knew it the instant he'd said it. Ramon knew it the instant Eric tensed and prepared to spring, and the few onlookers- another brother, two sisters who's names he'd forgotten- knew it when Eric's hand closed about Random's throat and lifted him off the ground.

Shit, Random, what have you gotten yourself into?

Eric snarled, holding Random at arms length, and Ramon watched, feeling a swell of protectiveness… what the hell? Random could take care of himself; you saw that the first time he kissed you. But the feeling didn't go away, in fact, intensified with the other man's next words.

"Listen to me, Bastard. Necessary though your presence may be at the council, if I were to end this, now, there'd be no love lost. Far from it, in fact. And do you think they-" he gestured, with the other hand "-will do anything to stop me?"

Far from it. Julian was leaning against the wall, a sadistic, malevolent smile on his face that made Ramon want to use his head to break a fucking hole in the wall. Fiona was looking rather smug, and Deirdre passively concerned. Although, from her expression, that could have been about the stain Random'd make if Eric threw him.

"So you're not glad to see me? I'm crushed."

Again, Ramon thought, the Wrong. Thing. To. Say.

It'd bear remembering, that Random didn't shut up under pressure. On one hand it amused him to see Eric squirm, on the other, the fact that he was moving again…

Eric took three strides towards the edge of the cliff, reaching out a hand and brushing Ramon aside, about as gently as, say… a speeding car might. He went staggering, thankfully away from the edge, and Eric continued, Random's legs kicking out, trying to connect with a knee before…

…and fuck. He was being held over the edge of the cliff. So he did the only sensible thing. He went completely still, lowered his eyes, and after a moment of concentration, managed to relax his muscles.

Ramon staggered to his feet, feeling furious (because Random's being hurt) because Eric had hit him, and helpless as all hell.

They stood there for years, it seemed. Centuries, the only sound the wind and Eric's heavy breathing. Random's eyes drifted up to Eric's face, and over his shoulder to Ramon, the tracing over Julian, Dierdre.

It was Eric who spoke first, secure in his momentary victory.

"You keep a civil tongue in your head" was accompanied by a slight shake, which made Random's jaw clench and Ramon wince. "Or next time, I might slip. And believe me, I'd enjoy it to no end." And with that, Random was tossed back onto solid ground, sent sprawling across the cobble stones.

He rubbed belligerently at his throat, and glared. But his voice didn't have any bite to it, and was subtly hoarse.

"I'll be on my best behavior, I promise."

Eric nodded, and strode off, Julian following. Deidre left quickly after them, and Fiona too- pausing only to laugh slightly. Ramon fought the instinct to break bones and Random sighed, pulling himself to his feet.

"Glad that's over with."

Ramon eyed him, reaching over to brush dust of his shoulder.

"That happens every time?"

Random nods, and straightens his collar, but Ramon doesn't miss the way his hands linger. Fuck. That asshole actually got him.

"That was the one you said I wouldn't like, wasn't it." And Random's eyes snap up to meet his, a vaguely concerned something in his eyes.

"None of that, if you please. The walls have ears here, and I'd rather not repeat that little dance just now. We can discuss it on the road home. But for now? Shall I show you to your rooms?"

He's startled, but gets it, and shuts up. But he'll hold Random to that, later.

"To my room sounds good. We can test the bed."

And Random grins a quick thank you and grabs his forearm, steering him towards the Castle of Amber.
